My Final Post for PIDP 3240

This is my final post fro my 3240 course, and what a course it has been! I definitely learned lots, more than I thought I would, but it wasn’t a walk in the park. I chose the social media option, and well it was informative, I found it to be very time consuming. I guess that’s to be expected of any on line course, this was my first. I now can say that I’m on Twitter and I have this blog, which I’m impressed that I was able to create. I feel more informed about social media and have a much better understanding of the ins and outs of some of it now, which is really important as I have a twelve year old daughter who I will need to keep up with. 🙂

Stay tuned for more posts, I will be starting a new link for my PIDP 3100 class! Thanks for checking out my blog!

Replacing professors with computers?

Contrary to my last post about University students wanting more engaging lectures and LESS technology, this article posted by CNN, stated by Bill Gates, suggests in the future, we should replace the professors with online learning and get the students face to face for labs and study groups.
I’m not sure I agree with this. I believe not everyone learns the same way and instructors have to work to engage the students, but they are still needed!
What do you think?

Students can feel overwhelmed

Found this interesting article that was based on a survey done in 2012, where the findings were that University students would rather learn by a really good, interactive, engaging lecture than by learning with lots of technology.

It’s really quite interesting. As adults, how would you prefer to learn?

Copyright cautions

The use of film scenes, music, and content found on the Internet during class falls under the fair use exemption in the Federal Copyright Act (Section 110.1, in the Federal Copyright Act, Public Law 94-553, Title 17). The display of copyrighted materials during face-to-face teaching permits the instructor to show entire feature length films under most circumstances. The crucial distinction to understand is that the public showing of any media is narrowly defined for educational purposes and the instructor must take steps to ensure that the copyright holder’s interests are protected. Placing copyright material on the Internet must comply with the fair use exemption. Recently the Register of Copyrights ruled that short portions of motion pictures may be incorporated into new works for the purpose of criticism or comment. Here is an interesting article from Inside Higher Education on the latest round of rules changes.

Here’s the website where I got the info.

Further education

I went to the information at SFU for MEd program last night. I’m really excited about this cohort being offered to PIDP students.
It’s designed for working professionals, so classes are on the weekends, every other weekend for six terms.
I have found the PIDP to be amazing, possibly a little life altering. I’ve met fabulous people, most of them in the same position as myself. I feel the MEd cohort would be very similar, probably more rewarding and I’m sure the people I meet would become huge assets for the entirety of the program. I’ve heard that many friendships are made and it’s a whole, new community.
I look forward to the experience. Now, to get my application together. Competition is tough to get in, so it has to be a great application!!! Wish me luck!
